Red Cedar Timber
The creativity and challenge of making items from beautiful timbers that customers love is what excites me.
I have always liked making things. My father was a saw miller so this was the connection to timber. I live in the Northern Rivers area of NSW and this is the home of these rare cabinet timbers. My father would cut Red Cedar and Silky Oak trees into beautiful boards for making furniture. This is where the passion started. I trained as a Woodwork teacher in the early 1980’s and later completed a B.Ed in Design and Technology and all the while I was collecting timber. I would use these beautiful timbers in the furniture I made.
In the late 90’s I built a house in Junction Hill where I showcased the timbers. The interior fit out was predominately Red Cedar with 10 other specialty species including Crows Ash flooring, Coachwood paneling and even the doors and windows were Rosewood. The house was a testimony to the beauty of these woods and was always a talking point among visitors.
From time to time, other furniture makers would buy timber off me and the supply side of Cedarworks began to grow. Customers from far and wide would order timber, with a particular focus on Australian Red Cedar. My passion for these rare and beautiful timbers grew. I was part of the whole journey from salvaging the logs, the cutting to specific sizes, the stacking and dying (often for several years), then machining and making items, or sending them off to a customer. I was surrounded by the most beautiful timbers in the world.
I remember planting a Red Cedar seedling at my mum’s house in 1985. It grew into a fine specimen but when she passed away and Dad was selling the house we decided to cut the tree down. Dad and I took it up to the shed and cut it up on the Bandsawmill. That timber is not for sale. It sits in the back of the shed waiting for the day when I get the time to make something for my grandchildren. That’s the cycle. I have 2 now.
That’s the Passion!
Often the grain and feature of the timber will steer the design and final aesthetics of the piece, but working with “world class” timber which could be hundreds of years old is the romance.
Attention to Quality/Detail
I love machining the timber and seeing the marvelous grain and feeling the smooth finish. This attention to detail and quality control is what makes Cedarworks different to others.
The real reward is when a customer is so pleased and elated with a project that you have made for them. You want the customer to enjoy and appreciate the timber as much as you do.
I can’t help but be a perfectionist when working with this material. It’s the same when supplying timber to a customer. It has to be the best.
Custom built table
When looking to have a custom made table built for our home a friend in the timber game recommended I contact Craig Perring. We were looking having a 12 seater table made to using a slab of timber we had inherited from a locally felled hoop pine tree. Craig started by meeting us at the timber mill to view the timber and then came to our home to get the feel of the space we would be placing the table in. From start to finish Craig included us in the journey of our table being built He used his expert knowledge & workmanship to make sure we got the most out of our timber & the best result for what we wanted. The brief we gave was for a modern fresh looking piece that matched a table we already owned in exact size and dimensions. The table was to live on a open covered deck and the finish Craig selected is hardwearing and shows off the timber too perfection. The finished result is great. A good looking practical table that is used everyday. Design specially from the brief we gave Craig and guided by his recommendations. The table is a talking point in our home.
Bespoke bedside tables
Northern Silky Oak
I had always wanted to have made a bespoke set of bedside tables that were sleek and stylish with a secret intention to lock away all my valuable treasures. Having seen Craig’s pieces before I approached him with the project knowing his eye for detail and amazing skills would be able to bring my dream to life. From my simple sketch and a few photo examples Craig designed exactly what I wanted in look and
feel. But then came the amazing part when we got deep inside the cabinetry frame to revel the amazing handmade Draws, slides and cornering Craig had created. All painstakingly made just too perfection. To have a piece built just for me with such love, dedication and attention was the most amazing process. We worked together to select the timber and the finish for the pieces to ensure I got the look I was wanting and that the timber was shown off to its best. Craig spent hours researching locks to not only suit the look of the piece but also to work as a security to lock away my treasures. Nothing was too much trouble and the stunning end product speaks for itself. Craig is not just a talented woodworker but a great designer who I am grateful to for taking on my very special project
